From one grandma to another
Since finally putting my kitchen in (a somewhat haphazard) order, I've been getting back to cooking that makes me happy. For Christmas, I made my grandmother Evelyn's hickory nut cake, and it was wonderful. Last night I made a raspberry custard inspired by her raspberry custard pies and it was yummy.
Today I saw a chowhound post on poundcake, so I called my mom for my other grandmother's southern pound cake. I copied down the recipe and waited until after grocery shopping and dinner tonight to delve into making it. It's not true to the original pound cake recipe -- this one appears to be heavier on sugar, and lighter on fat, but when done well, it's amazing with a nice thick, luscious crust.
Despite not feeling well this morning, I did manage to pull myself together and do some stock up grocery shopping. I snagged the chicken breasts on sale, pork loin roasts on sale and a small hunk of reasonably priced beef to marinate in kalbi sauce. Tonight i'm going to take one of the pork roasts and put a rub on it, sprinkle it with liquid smoke and toss it in an oven bag overnight. Tomorrow morning, I'll toss it in a low oven and let it do it's magic all day. I'll also go through the chicken tonight and bag and freeze it
