Out of it

While I've been pretty on top of work things, home life has gone to hell. The kitchen needs to be cleaned, and several other things need to be done. I fell out of the cooking habit (getting back into that this weekend), and we have not been exercising. Fortunately we've got a long weekend coming up, so we are going to try to focus on getting back on track.

Had dinner with Leslie and Adam tonight -- Azteca has redeemed itself. We stopped by the Microsoft Store, and I got the three Northwest gardening books that I was drooling over when we came out here to get married in May. We detoured through the Microsoft Museum, which was actually much more fun than the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle. :) Then we did the hanging out thing, and we were all sleepy so we called it an early night.

Of course we're still up and it's almost 2am. The plan was to come home, go grocery shopping and go to sleep. Routers interfered with that and threw the schedule off, so we didn't leave until a bit after midnight. Then I spent an hour in the new QFC. I was the only customer and it was absolutely fabulous. Prices are a bit high on some items, but it's defintely comparable to Wegman's on most levels. They don't have quite the extensive prepared foods section, but then again that was a little ridiculous in Wegman's anyway :) Beautiful store -- nice and bright yet natural looking.

Which brings me to what I was able to find there. Heirloom tomatoes. Fresh basil. Fresh mozzerella. I made an amazing agrodolce plate. I sliced a small orange tomato, placed half the slices around one side of the plate, half around the other. I sliced some fresh mozzerella and wove it between the one side of tomatoes. Then I plucked three lovely basil leaves, and tucked them on top of the mozzerella. A sprinkle of sea salt, a grind of fresh pepper, the smallest dot of olive oil on top of each, and a good splash of my 10 year balsamic from Trader Joe's. On the naked tomatoes, a sprinkling of sugar, mainly for texture. Next time I'd use demerrara. Absolutely divine contrasts.
